Solvent-Based Inks
Flexography and rotogravure use solvent based inks on low-absorption substrates such as: Cellophane, PVC, PET, polyethylene, polypropylene, among others. They are used mostly for packaging.
This type of inks can be used on laminated as well as non laminated substrates.
Solvent-based inks are formulated with highly volatile solvents such as: Ethyl Acetate, ketones and specially alcohols (ethanol and propanol).
The main vehicle in this type of inks is the NC . The NC must be modified and a plasticizer must be added to the formula. The most commonly used plasticizer is TOTM.
The NC is usually combined with other types of resins such as: polyamides, urethanes and maleic gum rosin esters (soluble in ethanol).
Andercol S.A. produces this fumaric and maleic gum rosin esters (Dercolan 646SE) which enhance gloss and drying by means of liberation of solvents.
